The Least Obvious Signs of Roof Damage

We’ve all seen or heard of the obvious signs of roof damage. From a sagging roof deck to leaks or wet spots inside your home, certain signs are hard to miss. But what about the signs that aren’t so obvious, the more subtle ones that seem to require a more specialized eye to recognize? The truth is, they can be pretty easy to spot if you just know what you’re looking for.

Here are the 5 least obvious signs of roof damage to look out for:

1. Black spots on your roof

Black spots typically mean moisture is trapped somewhere on your roof. While they may look like an easy to ignore, common issue, they can quickly become a dangerous problem if left unaddressed. Not only do they require immediate professional repair, but if neglected the problems could progressively worsen to mold and larger leaks in your home.

2. Whistling sounds in your home

If you notice a new air flow or whistling sound in your home, there’s a chance it’s from roof damage. Even minor roof damage can create an air flow that’s difficult to pinpoint without careful inspection. If your home is fully sealed and you still hear a whistle, you should have your roof checked immediately to prevent further damage.

3. Higher energy bills

Higher energy bills may go hand-in-hand with the whistling sound when it comes to roof damage. If the cool or warm air you pay for is able to escape the house, it could cause your energy bill to spike. Addressing the issue and pinpointing the area of damage should bring your expenses back down to normal.

4. Shingle granules in your gutters and/or nails on the ground

Shingle granules start to shed as they wear down. Finding coarse, black granules in your gutters is a sure sign of roof deterioration. You may also start noticing nails in your gutters or on the ground outside of your home. Though it may seem strange, the nails may get displaced from your roof due to occuring damage. Either or both of these physical finds are good clues to what may be happening on your roof.

5. Animals running on your roof

Animals love an easy place to hide. If you start noticing wild animals running around on your roof, it’s probably because they found a new home in a damaged area of your roof. It may seem funny at first, but it is a real problem that requires fast, professional attention.

Because the signs of roof damage aren’t always obvious or easy to find, you should schedule yearly regular maintenance with a professional roofer. This will ensure you don’t miss any of the signs, including the less obvious ones.
