3 Different Types of Asphalt Roof Shingles & How to Choose Yours

7/16/2016

With so many different types of asphalt roofing shingles on the market, it can be hard to sort them all out and decide what’s best for your roof.

This guide is meant to break down the categories and help you find the roofing shingles that will be perfect for your home.

Three-Tab or Strip Shingles

3-tab shingles, or strip shingles, are the most basic asphalt shingle available on the market. Rather than being installed one shingle at a time, they come in strips of 3 shingles for ease of installation. This lightweight and economical shingle is a popular choice. CertainTeed provides a range of 3-Tap shingles from Patriot to XT 25.

Architectural or Dimensional Shingles

These shingles are sturdier and thicker than 3-tab shingles. They tend to have longer-term warranties and are more durable due to their sturdier construction. They’re thicker than strip shingles which makes them tougher and also gives them more texture visually. They’re more similar to the depth and appearance of natural slate or wood.

Luxury Shingles

Luxury shingles are top-of-the-line asphalt shingles offering the most in terms of dimension and durability. Some luxury shingles even offer lifetime warranties. CertainTeed offers many luxury shingles, including Carriage House and Presidential Shake.
