Roof Storm Damage: What to do if Your Roof Sustains Damage

It’s official, the 2019 storm season is upon us. Here in the Rockies, the transition from spring to summer is a beautiful time of year. Along with the warming temperatures and snowmelt, comes strong storm activity. From hail and wind to torrential downpours, storm season in the Rockies is nothing short of a wild ride. While these weather patterns can be beautiful, they can also pack a major punch. This is why we’re devoting today’s post to what to do if your property sustains Denver roof storm damage.

Safety First

If you know a major storm is coming, we encourage you to resist the urge to step outside to take it in. While it can be soothing to take in a rainstorm or watch lightning flashing across the sky, it can also be dangerous if the weather conditions are extreme. We encourage you to watch the local news or listen to the radio to determine if conditions are dangerous before exposing yourself to the elements. If local weather authorities warn against it, take cover and survey the damage when the storm has subsided.

Survey the Storm Damage

Once the storm activity has come to an end, it’s time to survey your property for damage. If you believe that your property has been hit with hail and/or major wind gusts, it’s a good idea to walk the perimeter of your property, the first chance you get, to look for signs of damage. Have a camera handy as you survey the damage to document anything you find. As professional roof storm damage experts, we urge you not to climb on your roof. Simply do your best to spot potential damage from a safe vantage point. If you do see signs, contact a professional to complete a thorough roof storm damage inspection.

Signs of Roof Hail and Storm Damage

While Denver roof storm damage can be manifested in many ways, there are some key signs to watch for:

  •      Loose or missing shingles – strong wind gusts can loosen or even completely remove shingles from your roof. If you notice loose or missing shingles, it’s probably time to schedule a Denver roof storm damage inspection.
  •      Curling shingles – curling or lifting shingles are another sign of storm damage and general aging. Look for curling shingles and contact the pros if you notice any.
  •      Missing granules – while it may seem minor, missing granules on your shingles is a major sign of hail damage. Once granules are lost, the integrity of your shingles can decline rapidly. This is one of the first signs of hail damage your professional inspector will look for as they assess your damage.
  •      Dents in metal flashing, gutters, downspouts, etc. – an easy way to spot hail damage with the naked eye is to look for dents in the metalwork on your home. If you in fact spot some, chances are your hail damage is relatively widespread.
